Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

FAQ's

What Type of Regular Swedish Massage do you Offer?

We offer Swedish massage in light, medium, and firm pressure levels to help relax the body, improve circulation, and ease general tension, in a relaxing spa-like atmosphere, with relaxing music, heated stones for elevated relaxation, aromatherapy, sugar scrubs and much more! However, for clients seeking lasting relief from muscle tension/tightness, muscle knots, or limited mobility, we recommend Myofascial Release.

Does the Velvet Lotus Massage Spa offer Deep Tissue massage?

Unfortunately, we do not offer Deep Tissue massage. The maximum pressure applied during our sessions is firm, not deep. This decision is based on safety concerns, as most massage therapy education does not include comprehensive training in nerve pathway anatomy. Applying deep pressure without precise anatomical knowledge can compress or damage nerves, and over time, repeated use of excessive pressure may lead to nerve injuries for both the client and the therapist. Instead, we specialize in Myofascial Release and other advanced therapeutic techniques that work deeper in a safe, targeted, and sustainable way—supporting long-term healing without unnecessary risk.

Why Is Myofascial Release More Effective Than Deep Tissue Massage? While Deep Tissue and Swedish massage are widely known, they primarily target the surface layers of muscle and are generally designed for relaxation. Despite its name, Deep Tissue massage doesn’t actually reach the deepest structures of the body. It works by pressing hard on the muscles, but often fails to fully address the root cause of tension and tension knots: the fascia—the body’s connective tissue network.  Myofascial Release works deeper—not by pressing harder, but by using gentle, slow, sustained traction to release the muscle knots and fascia (the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, nerves, and joints.) Unlike Deep Tissue massage, which can be painful and potentially damaging if applied incorrectly, Myofascial Release is gentle and pain-free, yet highly effective.

Can I get Myofascial Release and a Relaxing Swedish Massage  Combined Into One 60 Minute Session?

If you are experiencing discomfort or have muscle knots that need to be released, we recommend that our clients schedule a full 60 minute session of myofascial release for either upper or lower body (without Swedish Massage), so that we will have enough time to allow the muscles and muscle knots to release. However, if you would like to experience Myofascial Release and Swedish massage in one session, we recommend that you choose a 90 minute massage.

Why Myofascial Release Is More Effective Than Deep Tissue Massage

While Deep Tissue and Swedish massage are widely known, they only release 10% of muscle and fascial restrictions, and primarily target the superficial layers of muscle and are generally designed for relaxation. Despite its name, Deep Tissue massage doesn’t actually reach the deepest muscles of the body. It works by applying hard pressure to the surface of the muscles, but often fails to release the fascia, which is the root cause of tension knots, stiffness and discomfort.

Can’t I just go anywhere to get a massage? What makes you different?”

Sure, you can go anywhere for a massage—but most places offer the same generic deep tissue or Swedish routine, applied the same way to every body. The problem? Deep tissue often presses into surface-level muscle without addressing the root cause of pain.

If you’re dealing with real discomfort—like chronic knots, postural tension, or tightness that keeps coming back—those one-size-fits-all massages won’t give you lasting relief. In fact, deep tissue often misses the deeper fascial restrictions entirely, or worse, can leave you feeling bruised without real change.

At Velvet Lotus Massage Spa, we don’t guess — we assess. We observe your posture and holding patterns, then use precise myofascial release to address the specific areas where your body is overcompensating. We target the actual source of your discomfort, not just the symptoms. That’s the difference between temporary relief and real, lasting results.

At Velvet Lotus Massage Spa, we serve over 80 clients each month, and most of them report that their pain relief lasts approximately four weeks before needing another session. However, every client is unique, and more than one session may be necessary, especially for long-standing or complex conditions.  By addressing the root cause of discomfort rather than just surface-level tension, Myofascial Release offers a safer, deeper, and longer-lasting solution to muscle tension than traditional Deep Tissue or Swedish massage techniques.
